1s v 2s showdown, SSS Tournament and more!

Our 1s and 2s have been very busy over the last few weeks !! A showdown of the century between the two teams resulted in a 2s win after a neck and neck game. A long but successful day at the SSS tournament saw EUNC dominating the medal table, with the 1s winning and the 2s placing third! Both teams have also qualified for the Scottish Cup quarter finals after winning their first knock out games after their tournament success last Semester. See the posts below for a blow by blow account of the last few weeks!!

First up it is the game of the season, EUNC 1s vs EUNC 2s!! Final score 38 - 41 to the 2s: (07/02/18)

POV 1s:

After months of training together EUNC 1 and EUNC 2 came head to head for their first official BUCS fixture of the season.

Starting Seven: Chloe Logan (GS), Antonia Peckham (GA), Clare Tuhoy (WA), Rebecca Metcalfe (C), Kirstie Burns (WD), Hannah Grant (GD), Eilidh Reid (GK).

It started okay, the 2s came out very strong but we played our own game and finished the first quarter 1 goal up. Strong defence from the 2s meant we had struggled getting the ball into the shooting circle and so Mary Ann made the decision to make some positional changes to resolve this. Rosie Oakley Slater came on to GA.

Then the long and short of it basically was we went into the final quarter 1 goal down. It was the tensest match I have ever played with it going goal for goal to each team nearly the full way through. We were 1 goal up with 3 minutes to go but the 2s experience playing together showed and they pulled through to win.

Final Score: EUNC 1 38 – 41 EUNC 2

I don’t know any of the statistics but I’m sure the score is enough to keep everyone talking for a good few years anyway!

Thanks to everyone for coming to watch and congratulations to the 2s.

Eilidh xx

POV 2s:

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”

Starting 7: (GS-GK) Meg, Gabbi, Fergy, Watko, Hev10, Alice, and Ellie.

The entire match was essentially goal for goal; a battle of the shooters. The real work took place in both teams’ through-court defence. The biggest lead that was taken by either team at any time was 3 goals, which, in the end was what the 2s won by. Lil Emma took a knock early in the 1st quarter and Rosi took over at Centre. Lauren Metcalfe moved to Goal Defence at half time. An outstanding performance was put on by all, but surreal efforts from Ellie and Lauren Metcalfe won recognition from peers as players of the match. Final score: 1s 38-41 2s.

This is the first time in BUCS history that the 2s have beat the 1s. I couldn’t be more proud of our team and the effort we have put in all season. We are glad to finally be part of a fully competitive league, and look forward to the rest of our fixtures. All is still to play for. A huge thank you on behalf of the 2s to the masses that turned out to watch. It was a surreal experience to play with a crowd. Your support for the club has not gone unnoticed. We hope you enjoyed the show! 2s2s2s out x

Scottish Cup Second Round:

1s 60 - 48 St Andrews 1s

After a fab day at the Scottish Cup tournament last semester, EUNC 1 were drawn to play St Andrews University in the second round of the Scottish Cup.

Following a tough loss to the 2s earlier in the week and a defeat to St Andrews earlier in the season, we were very keen to bounce back. Given the knockout style of the fixture both teams had everything to play for!

Starting Seven: Chloe Logan (GS), Antonia Peckham (GA), Clare Tuhoy (WA), Rebecca Metcalfe (C), Kirstie Burns (WD), Hannah Grant (GD), Eilidh Reid (GK).

Both teams came out strong. We had a lot of opportunities at goal but a few missed shots put us one goal down after the first quarter. Score: 12-13

Rosie Oakley Slater came onto (GA) and Antonia moved back to GS. This combination worked well and drives for the ball as a team were strong with use of changes in speed and direction we had worked on that week in training. It was good to see an added dimension to our play and it payed off as we won that quarter 14-12.

Half-time Score: 26-25 to Edinburgh.

Emma Niven came on to (WD) at half time and made an instant impression! More to come…

We won the third quarter 21-10.

Going into the final quarter, we knew the game was by no means won. Abby Riddle came into (C) and Lara Jones played (GK). Both players did exceptionally well to come on with so much energy and composure. Abby brought fresh legs to the centre court and helped bring the ball calmly down the court. Lara was getting tips left, right, and centre and her lean was very effective over their GA’s shot.

Final Score: EUNC 60-48 St Andrews Uni

Players Player: Emma Niven (WD)

Coming on a half time, Emma had a huge immediate impact! Her tight marking led to numerous intercepts and she was a key player bringing the ball through the court. Emma is a very valuable player as she remarkably strong in all of WA/C/WD and adds an element of grit and determination to the team.

Shooting Stats: Chloe: 2/9

Antonia: 48/54

Rosie: 10/13

Total: 60/76 (79%) St Andrews total: 48/60

Thanks to all our mum’s for coming to watch and giving us tips!

We have now progressed to the Quarter Final of the Scottish Cup and look forward to playing Glasgow South Saltires at home in the coming month!

2s 66 - 30 Holyrood Celts

The 2s took on the Holyrood Celts in the second round of the Scottish Cup and achieved a comfortable win. All 11 girls took the court, and our lil broken Watko cheered us on from the side. It was a fun game in which we got to try out numerous combinations, all successful. Unfortunately, Jess joined Em on the injury list with a fractured elbow. Wall 1-0 Jess. The 2s are excited about the rest of the tournament, and are set to play either Orkney or Onyx in the next round. This is the first time the 2s have gone through to the 2nd round. Yeah boiiiii! Player of the match: Grace. Final score: 66-30. 2s2s2s out x

SSS Tournament (17/02/18)

1s - Winners!!

Last weekend we travelled to St Andrews to take part in the SSS tournament. Team: Chloe Logan, Rosie Oakley Slater, Clare Tuhoy, Rebecca Metcalfe, Emma Niven, Kirstie Burns, Lara Jones, Eilidh Reid, Megan McNair, Hannah Grant All teams played 2 x 10 minute halves against each other and the tournament was decided on points. Throughout the day we played St Andrews 1, Edinburgh 2, Dundee 1, Glasgow 1, St Andrews 2 & St Andrews 3. Having won all our games we took gold and held onto the trophy for another year!

2s - 3rd (and fab u lous)

A long but successful day for the 2s who played under the title of EUNC B for the day. They finished in 3rd place, losing only to EUNC As and St Andrews 1s. With 2 injuries across the shooting and mid-court areas, the Bs called in a few favours and borrowed some pals for the day. Big up Meg Wallace of the 3s who owned the circle, having only played with the 2s once in training the morning before. Congrats on your seamless transition, I hope you enjoyed yourself! Myself (Meg) and Abby Riddell swapped teams for the day to balance out the 2 EUNC squads and give us the best chance at gold and silver, unfortunately it was not to be on the day with the Bs narrowly missing out. Thank you to the As for having me, I had a lot of fun (apart from playing against my own team lol cri everytim), and to Abby for your outstanding performance. Player of the tournament: Hev 10 Marsh.
