MATCH REPORTS - 18/11/17

With our top 6 teams in action this Saturday, EUNC had a very successful BUCS Saturday, coming away with five wins. Our 1s were back with a bang and a point to prove after their loss against the Saints the week before, recording a massive win against Strathclyde 1s (73-23)! Our 2s continued their Division 1 winning streak to make it 3/3 in their BUCS matches so far! Meanwhile our 3s beat Dundee 1s, and our 4s beat Napier 1s in Division 2. The 6s smashed it against Aberdeen 3s winning by almost 50 goals(!) whilst our 5s were unable to keep up with St Andrews 2s. Individual match reports below:

1s 73 - 23 Strathclyde 1s (Home) WIN

Starting 7: Antonia Peckham, Rosie Oakley-Slater, Clare Tuohy, Rebecca Metcalfe, Emma Niven, Hannah Grant, Eilidh Reid.

It’s been a really strong week in training and we were all keen to get back on court and show that last week was a “blip”.

We played well from the beginning, keeping passes hard and flat and supporting each other as a team bringing the ball through the court. It was great to see a more positive energy on court and everyone cheering each other on! The first quarter finished 16-7.

Second quarter was fab again! Rosie (GA) and Antonia (GS) worked really well together in the shooting circle despite this being a relatively new combination. Rebecca (C) and Emma (WD) were a massive support to the circle defence, keeping their players off the circle edge and forcing the feeds long! We extended our lead to 33-10.

In the third quarter, Chloe Logan came onto (GS), Antonia moved to (GA) and Kirstie Burns came onto (WD). At half time, Mary Ann told us to work on our full team defence which payed off massively and everyone was winning balls up and down the court! A highlight of the match for me was that nobody ever let her head go down. If we made a mistake and lost the ball, we would win it back! Third quarter ended 58-16.

The final quarter saw Octavia Mason play (GA), Abby Riddle took up (C) and Lara Jones played (GK). Having fresh legs across the court proved to be invaluable and these girls kept the intensity up.

Full Time Score: 73-23

An amazing result and phenomenal full team effort.

Shooting Stats: Antonia (94%), Chloe (88%), Taves (100%), Rosie (79%), Team (90%). “sick” indeed!

Player’s Player: Hannah Grant. Very well deserved! You won an unbelievable amount of ball for us today - rebounds, interceptions, literally anything and everything! Playing against Strath’s strongest player, you completely stopped her having a big impact on the game. I hope you are really pleased with your performance, I know Mary Ann was!

I am very proud of the whole team for coming back so strong and are looking forward to carrying this forward to all our future matches.

Finally, we would all like to thank our coach Mary Ann for all her support and advice today and helping us get back on form throughout this week.

2s 69 - 38 Heriot Watt 1s (away) WIN

It was a successful trip to the Oriam on Saturday for the 2s. We had a depleted squad of 8 - not ideal but the show had to go on. There isn’t too much to share from the match. Everyone took to the court and played well. The standard of matchplay allowed us to practice things such as fewer passes through the court, and giving first time balls. It also let us groove the use of straight line play. The through court defence took interception after interception without tiring or slowing down. The attackers then took over and delivered great passes to the shooters who rarely missed a shot. Our aims for the match were to keep unforced errors to a minimum, and to gain a goal difference of 20. We exceeded our aims by making very little mistakes, and having a goal difference of 31. The final score was 69-38. The game wasn’t particularly challenging. But, we hope that achieving said scoreline with only 8 players shows that the 2s are a force to be reckoned with. 2s2s2s out x

P.S. The 2s would like to thank our friend Georgia for stepping up to the plate and umpiring our div. 1 match. She was excellent and it wasn’t just us that thought so, our hero Jeannie made sure the club heard about her performance too... tekkers G!

3s 42 - 37 Dundee 1s (home) WIN

The 3s came out very strong against Dundee 1s. It was an intense game with a lot of turnovers from both teams, and the 3s shooters coped well with a strong circle defence from Dundee. After half time 3s were up by 10. Complacency in the 3rd quarter meant the 3s let their lead slip a little. But the final quarter the 3s took the win. Meaning 2 wins from 2 for the EUNC 3 squad. Great fight and a lot of lessons to take back to training.

4s 51 - 29 Napier 1s (away) WIN

After a strong warm up and winning first centre the 4s were ready to face Napier 1s!

The first ball was unfortunately turned over and Napier started the game up by 2. Once we then got into the game, the scores continued closely in the first quarter finishing with a 13-13 draw. In the second quarter we switched around the attack and put our player of the match Ola at GA and she played brilliantly and didn't miss a shot! Continuing with strong defence and even stronger attack, we were 21-28 at the end of the second quarter. Unfortunately we had a dip in the 3rd quarter where Napier came back fighting hard and our defence struggled against this. Losing the third quarter by two we knew if we worked hard enough we could pull this back by putting on the team that won that 2nd quarter. By doing this we fought, got back our lead and manage to hold it until the end! Well done 4s, we didn't give up!

5s 26 - 39 St Andrews 2s (away) LOSS

After a 17-4 loss in the first quarter, 5s managed to redeem themselves in the second and third but unfortunately it wasn't enough to take the win with the final score being 26-39. Player of the match went to Millie Diss

6s 61 - 14 Aberdeen 3s (home) WIN

Edinburgh 6’s played at home against Aberdeen 3’s. This was the first time the teams had met and we did not know what to expect. The whole team played extremely well, with the end score being 61-14 to Edinburgh. The player of the match was Hannie Browne (C), who was key in bringing the ball up the court. All of the team played extremely well and movement on court was fantastic.
