MATCH REPORTS - 04/11/17 & 11/11/17

04/11/17 - only three teams in BUCS matches which led to two close losses from the 5s and 8s but a heroic win from the 6s, who beat Robert Gordon University 2s by 19 goals having lost to them three weeks previously!!

5s 32 - 36 Dundee 2s LOSS

5s had a challenging game against Dundee 2s with the final score being 36-32. The team fought hard until the end with great defence and movement down the court but tired legs let us down in the last few minutes.

6s 45 - 26 RGU 2s HOME WIN

Edinburgh 6s played at home against RGU 2's. After previously losing to them we beat them 45-26 which reflects the progress we have made as a team. The shooting was phenomenal with Imogen Bates (GS) winning player of the match. During our training sessions we had been focusing on set plays moving down the court which we felt really paid off and helped us to secure our win, overall a really great team performance.

8s 25 - 32 Heriot-Watt 3s AWAY LOSS

On Saturday November 4th, the eights travelled to Herriot Watt to play against their 3rd team. The standard of the game was extremely high and unfortunately Herriot Watt pulled away in the third quarter and built up a lead, with the game ending 32-25. Definitely some positives to take away as well as areas to work on!

11/11/17 - a mixed day for EUNC, as our 1s unexpectedly lost St Andrews 1s (proof that anything can happen in netball and that the level of university netball in Scotland at the moment is better than ever - credit to the Saints for some great play!) Meanwhile our 2s won against Glasgow 1s away but decided to give us all a heart attack by letting a 12 goal advantage slip to 1 goal in the last quarter, a win is a win however! Our 7s dominated over the University of the West of Scotland 1s, winning away 62-21!! Individual match reports below:

1s 48 - 59 St Andrews 1s AWAY LOSS

Last Saturday EUNC 1s travelled to St Andrews for our second away match of the season.

Starting 7: Chloe Logan, Antonia Peckham, Clare Tuohy, Rebecca Metcalfe, Emma Niven, Hannah Grant, Eilidh Reid

We came out strong and finished the first quarter 18-14 up. The play was flowing really well, particularly in attack and I was feeling confident we would continue to extend the lead gradually.

However, having made a few player and positional changes after the first quarter we struggled as a team to get back into the flow and made some unforced errors. This lead us to fall behind, with the half time score sitting at 31-26 to St Andrews.

From that point on we were unable to bring it back. The third quarter finished 39-43 again to St Andrews.

I remember at that final quarter time we all still believed we could win. We brought it to within 2 goals behind meaning we only needed one turnover to even the playing field. However, when we didn’t convert that crucial turnover we let it slip away for the last time and our heads went down. The match finished a disappointing 59-48 to St Andrews.

Immediately after the match it was difficult to pin point exactly what had happened. Having since submitted our individual reviews of the team and personal performance to our coach and having a long chat about it as a team, it has become apparent that we all agree this is because it wasn’t anything technical that let us down.

St Andrews had a large support and momentum and in comparison, we lacked the energy and drive to pull ourselves back.

We know what we need to do now and have had a strong and competitive week in training with the 2s. I am grateful to my team for taking the time to reflect on this seriously and putting what we have discussed into practice to ensure from this point onwards, and come the end of the season, we will come out on top!

Congratulations to Clare Tuohy for player of the match, as chosen by St Andrews. I completely agree, feeds were absolutely on point and you are such a positive and supportive player to have on court always - really well played!

2s 50 - 49 Glasgow 1s AWAY WIN

EUNC 2s vs. Glasgow University 1s - 11/11/2017 The 2s had a bit of a stressful Saturday what with Meg thinking the start time was the warm up time, their umpire not showing up, and the news of the 1s loss. Eventually, the game went underway.

Starting 7: Meg McNair Gabbi Barker Emma Watkinson Rosina Costello Heather Marshall Alice Insull Lauren Metcalfe

In the opening minutes of the first quarter, Glasgow took an early lead. But, as composed as ever, the 2s stepped up and regained control. 16-9 to the 2s. The second quarter was much the same; Glasgow started strong but Edinburgh fought back. 32-22. Lauren Sinclair took the court as GD and was always where we needed her to be. Her clean interception work allowed us to increase the lead again. 45-33. Grace Ferris (GA) and Jess McArthur (WA) joined the 7 for the last quarter. With a 12 goal lead, the 2s thought we had it in the bag. However, Glasgow suddenly showed us what they were capable of and won the quarter. In the last second they put the ball in the net. 50-49.

A close encounter for the 2s. We are understandably somewhat disappointed with the score. However, a win is a win. There was some lovely netball, but lots to take away from the match too. Player of the match: Gabbi Barker (again!). 2s2s2s out x

7s 62 - 21 UWS 1s AWAY WIN

This was our first cup match, and second match together. Having played UWS two weeks ago we had been able to improve our game to suit theirs and plan our tactics. The final score was 62-21 to Edinburgh, a much bigger margin than the last time we played them. We are starting to play more as a team, as well as outr individual play coming on leaps and bounds, but still being able to learn from our mistakes for next time. We were able to feed off each other, ending in an amazing result we are all proud off. Sarah Dallas was player of the match for her defensive skills and amount of interceptions, preventing the other team from making it into their shooting third very much.
