Match Report: TROPHY DEFEAT

Wednesday 15th February saw Edinburgh 1s take on Leeds in the last 16 matches of the BUCS trophy. Edinburgh were the only Scottish university team still remaining in the competition at this stage and were determined to show the English sides that Scotland can compete too. Edinburgh 1s are currently top of BUCS division Scottish 1A and Leeds are top of Northern 1A so it was all to play for.

The Edinburgh side were excited to be pushed by an English side, and went out strong to take an early lead 7-3. Edinburgh were very strong in the defensive third from Edinburgh, they continues to push for turn overs through the first quarter. Leeds kept up a strong fight and the score was 10-7 to Edinburgh after 15 minutes. In the second quarter Leeds fought hard and managed to take the lead for the first time in the match. It was goal for goal for around five minutes. Iona Holmes and Emily Nicholl kept fighting in defence and got some clean interceptions. But it wasn't enough and Leeds crept ahead making it 27-23 at half time. Both teams came out strong after half time and both held their own centres for the first 5 minutes. Edinburgh broke Leeds' centre and managed to slowly catch up and equalise. Leeds reacted quickly and pulled away yet again to 43-40 at the end of the third quarter. With three minutes left on the clock Edinburgh were ahead 45-44. Leeds managed to secure the next two goals and take the lead back 46-45. Leeds then used this momentum and pulled away to take the 49-45 victory over EUNC. The Edinburgh side would like to thank Leeds for the match, and wish them all the best in the next stage of the BUCS trophy.

This match has given Edinburgh competition and there's lots to work on. The Edinburgh side will meet Leeds once again in the play-offs for Northern Prem at the end of this season.
