Match Report: SATURDAY 29TH OCTOBER PRIME TIME

Saturday 29th October saw EUNC's prime teams take to the court.

EUNC 5 Edinburgh 5s beat Glasgow Caledonians 32-19 at home in the CSE. A strong first quarter saw Edinburgh move ahead, but a dominant second quarter by Caledonians saw the gap close, with Edinburgh still narrowly ahead at half time. In the second half, the team put their training into practice, with consistently better movement down the court. There was some excellent shooting by both Gemma Finegold and Ola Adeyemi, allowing Edinburgh to extend their lead - eventually winning 32-19. Gemma Finegold deservedly was awarded man of the match, with consistent shooting throughout

EUNC 2

Next up was EUNC 2 who travelled to St Andrews to play in what was such an exciting game to watch. The final score wasn’t the result Edinburgh had hoped for, the team put up such a great fight and it was a really close game. An early 7am rise for EUNC 2, for the second day in a row was a struggle but the squad didn’t let that get in the way! The girls adapted style of play extremely well turning over lots of ball through the court – shout out to Lauren ‘limbs’ Metcalfe who was intercepting balls all over the show! The circle defence did an amazing job against an extremely strong combination of shooters from St Andrews, keeping their cool throughout the match and picking up the rebounds where they could. Looking at the quarters as 4 separate matches, the middle two quarters were extremely close with just 1 goal difference, however, with the final score ending at 52-43, St Andrews managed to come out victorious. Captain Beth Hale is extremely proud of the team and the fight they put up. EUNC 2 definitely displayed the best netball performance so far this year! TWOS TWOS TWOS TWOS! EUNC 3 Dundee started off strong and gave the 3s a tough match to start with. The EUNC 3 stayed calm regardless and made the most of any turnovers made by the dynamic defence of Louise Ferguson, Heather Marshall and Claire Metcalfe. The first quarter ended 15-10 to EUNC 3.

The second quarter saw Dundee drop a bit and Edinburgh took full advantage of this. Jenny O'Reilly and Lizzie Freeman worked exceptionally well together in the attacking circle making the most of any gaps they saw and working around each other to get into the best spaces possible. This allowed Lois Mackay to make strong and consistently smooth passes into the shooters which helped extend the lead by a great bit. Dundee managed to keep their cool regardless of this and continued to give the Edinburgh a good game.

In the 3rd quarter, Dundee stepped up their game again and really pushed EUNC 3. Georgia Turnbull managed to keep the girls calm at C and worked well with Grace Ferris to work the ball up to the attacking end. Jess McArthur made good use of the space available but seemed to be colour blind to the colour orange as she found herself getting great interceptions but landing just out of the side line. Aisha Taylor-Sinclair worked well with Cesca Gransden and Claire Metcalfe in defence using their strong postures and long limbs to shake the attack and get essential tips.

In the final quarter the Edinburgh made it their game again by making the most of every turnover they got. Rosina Costello at C had outstanding stamina which allowed her to be everywhere we needed her to be which also encouraged everyone else to try harder. Claire Metcalfe and Heather Marshall worked well in the defensive circle to shake the shooters by doubling up on the giant GS and putting pressure on the GA. Jenny O'Reilly's accuracy when shooting massively helped the girls with this win and led to her being given yet another player of the match. The match ended 58-41 to EUNC 3.

EUNC 7 Last but certainly not least. EUNC 7 travelled to Dundee to take on Abertay 2nd in their first EVER BUCS match. EUNC 7 team was introduced this season as there is such a high standard of netball coming through trials every year, the Edinburgh university netball needs to meet the demand. EUNC 7 made a cracking start to the season. The team played really well together and showed consistency in each quarter and came out victorious, 41-9 FT. Well done to all the girls making their EUNC debuts and to our favourite umpire Lorraine Doig turned EUNC player who was nominated as player of the match! Somehow we don't think this victory is just down to beginners luck! Captain Fran Wright is especially pleased with how well the team worked together, and eager to get the season underway in their next match this Saturday! SMASHED IT!
