Match Report: SATURDAY 22ND OCTOBER

Saturday 22rd October was a relatively quiet one for EUNC with only 2 matches to be played. The top divisions had been purposefully left clear of fixtures to allow for girls to trial SSS National Rep squad, on Sunday 23rd October.

EUNC 3-5 have entered into the Scottish Conference Cup, EUNC 3 got a bye to the last 16. However, EUNC 4 and EUNC 5 had to battle it out against Napier 1 and Aberdeen 1, respectively, to earn their place in the last 16 of the cup. With the matches both being straight knock-outs, EUNC had two very tough matches!

EUNC 5

EUNC 5 took on Aberdeen 1s at home in the first round of the Scottish Conference Cup. After a tough match last weekend away, against Aberdeen 2, EUNC 5 went into this match nervous but optimistic. With both teams pushing from the start, the match got off to a good start. At half time the score was almost neck and neck. However, the second half saw Aberdeen take the lead. Rosina Barton, Man of the Match, had an amazing match and helped to keep EUNC 5 calm through the centre court. However, Aberdeen’s accurate passing and strong drives saw the score edge further away from Edinburgh. Edinburgh defence held there own, with some great interceptions, but it wasn’t enough. EUNC 5 eventually lost out 32-42 FT. The match has provided EUNC 5 with lots to work on in the upcoming weeks, with a focus on driving forward as well as clearing. Thank you very much to Aberdeen 1 for the match and for making the long trip down.

EUNC 4

EUNC 4 took on Napier 1 in the first round of the Scottish Conference Cup. The squad made the short travel out to [EN]GAGE Sports Centre, Sighthill. With a longer than normal warm-up slot and a great week of play in training, EUNC 4 were feeling super pumped for the match. EUNC started out as they meant to go on, and were ahead at the end of the first quarter. Congratulations to Pippa Hughes who intercepted a shot in the second quarter, one of those showstopper moments we were all very impressed with. Edinburgh stayed ahead throughout the match, only with a few stormers from Napier when they got to within one goal. However, the Edinburgh side went into the final quarter with a convincing lead of 30-22. Razann Al Ghussein played amazingly in the attacking half against a very strong Napier GD and was nominated Players’ player of the match. Captain Rita Venermo, Man of the Match, had a great match and helped the attack and defence link up the court seamlessly. EUNC 4 took the win 37-31 FT. Thank you very much to Napier for what was a lovely match to play and watch. EUNC 4’s next match is against Napier 1 again this time in the BUCS league, so the two sides will meet again soon.
